Dell World 2011 Coming to Austin in October
Dell World 2011 - Coming to Austin in October

Here is the post published on the 9th August 2011 :
In October, Dell is inviting technology leaders to the first ever event. Dell World 2011, taking place October 12-14, 2011 at the Austin Convention Center. The purpose of Dell World is to bring together IT visionaries, leaders and experts from around the world and across industries to learn how to streamline investments that uncover efficiencies and ultimately drive innovation. You be hearing more about Dell World on this blog and elsewhere in the weeks leading up to the event.
I asked the folks who are working to on pulling Dell World together for some insight into what this is all about. Heres what they shared:
Over the past 50 years, the technology industry has revolutionized the way we work and live. Every 10-15 years, the industry has ushered in a new era that has fundamentally changed the competitive landscape and how we interact with technology. Today, we are at an inflection point that is being driven by a convergence of macroeconomic, business and technology trends that we call the Virtual Era.
This new era brings its own set of challenges for CIOs. The workforce is no longer confined to the office. Data growth is increasing exponentially. Compliance with new regulations continues to drive storage demand as filing that kind of data a crucial necessity. In addition, the volatile and competitive marketplace is demanding that organizations have technology that is both agile and scalable to evolve as they do. CIOs are no longer solely focused on keeping the technology up and running. Now, CIOs are being forced to look at how technology can help their organizations become more efficient to free up some resources so they can reinvest in innovation.
The goal of Dell World is to help our customers overcome these challenges and create a knowledge-sharing environment that will lead to innovative business solutions. The event will showcase technology experiences in real-world environments. Key topics will include: safely embracing consumerization, harnessing social networking, breaking through virtualization ceilings and efficiently coping with the ongoing data deluge.
Presenting on the topic of “Unlocking Opportunity through Innovation,” Chairman and CEO Michael Dell will deliver the opening keynote offering his perspective on the changing face of IT and its future impact on global economic growth, competitiveness and the nature of how people live, work and play.
Dell World 2011 attendees will hear from industry leaders including:
- Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO
- Marc Benioff, salesforce.com chairman and CEO
- Paul Maritz, VMware CEO
- Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO
- Brad Anderson, senior vice president of Dell’s Enterprise Solutions group

Dell Unveils Powerful 11 Inch Alienware M11x Gaming Laptop
Lets begin with a cliche: big things come in small packages. Rarely has that statement been so fitting when it comes to Dells crazy new 11-inch gaming laptop. Pulling from the design of its bigger and beefier brothers, the M15x and M17x, the Alienware M11x packs a lot of power into a little box. Read on for our first impressions.

Given some of Dells recent efforts, we were wondering if theyd be able to pull off any big tricks in terms of exciting new products for CES. Its nice to not be disappointed—frankly, the M11x is anything but. Dell is pushing the device as something of a best of both worlds gaming laptop. The biggest problems when it comes to gaming laptops are typically the immense size/weight of the systems and the generally terrible battery life. The M11x tackles these issues with its diminutive size–its heavier than most ultraportables, but very manageable–and its hybrid operating mode.
The hybrid graphics mode works similarly to the systems introduced in other laptops. Essentially, when youre looking to get the most battery life out of your system, just surfing the web and sending out emails or listening to music, you leave the system using its integrated graphics chips. Hitting a switch, however, engages the much more powerful NVIDIA GeForce GT335m. Dell claims that the system will run Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 at more than 30 frames per second at the panels native resolution (as yet unknown, but either 1280x720 or 1366x768). In integrated graphics mode, the company says users can expect to get around 6 hours of battery life, while in high-performance mode, users can expect around 2.
The M11x is surprisingly capable and fun to use. It looks a little chunky in the pictures, but it feels a lot thinner in person. Lets be honest, we cant really expect a gaming laptop to hit eleven inches and still maintain a super svelte figure. Dell takes advantage of that extra thickness, too, by adding USB ports, FireWire, VGA, HDMI, DisplayPort and a card reader. It also features the same design stylings users have come to expect from the new Alienware lines—the industrial, squared-off edges, backlit keyboard and even AlienFX lights shining through the front edges of the machine.

What can you expect to pay for the laptop? Well, you might be surprised. We were informed that users will be able to buy the Alienware M11x for under a thousand dollars, which, as most people will guess, probably means well see it available for something close to $999.99. Expensive for an 11-inch laptop these days, sure‐but given its unique feaures and abilities, Ive no doubt itll be a commercial success.
